The Perfect Hike Guide: Equipping Your Dog for Adventure đČđŸ
Updated 15 October 2026
In short: to go hiking with your dog: a Y harness that frees the shoulders, a short lead for tricky stretches, clean water (not puddles, which can carry leptospirosis), a small first-aid kit with a tick remover, and a paw check when you get back. Match the distance to its age and fitness, and check local rules: in England and Wales, a short lead is compulsory on open access land from 1 March to 31 July and at all times near livestock.
The packing checklist
In my bag:
The right gear
Y-shaped, shoulders free
No pressure on the throat on climbs, and free shoulder movement for scrambling.
Short for tricky stretches
1.2â1.5 m on ridges, near livestock or roads; 2.5 m on wide trails.
Clean, and often
Offer water regularly, especially in warm weather.

Our Comfort Y harnesses leave the shoulders free; our multi-position leads go from 120 to 250 cm and can be worn across the body to keep your hands free on technical stretches. For water, our insulated bottles hold 1 litre and hide two stainless steel bowls.
Safety: what you need to know
My dog can drink from puddles and ponds.
FALSEStanding water can carry leptospirosis, a serious disease. Bring clean water.
A town dog can do 20 km on its first hike.
FALSEBuild up distance and climbs gradually, as you would. Puppies and seniors do shorter outings.
You should check your dog when you get back.
TRUEPaws (cuts, grass seeds between the toes), ears and coat (ticks): a few minutes is enough.
Sheep and cattle: on hills and farmland, keep your dog on a lead near livestock and give them a wide berth. If cattle threaten you, let your dog off the lead so you can both get to safety, as the Countryside Code advises.

Frequently asked questions
Which harness for hiking?
A well-fitted Y harness that leaves the shoulders free and doesn't press on the throat on climbs.
How much water should I bring for my dog?
It depends on its size, the length of the hike and the heat. Bring plenty and offer water often; in hot weather, shorten the outing.
From what age can my puppy go hiking?
Proper hikes should wait until growth is complete. Before then, stick to short outings in nature, and ask your vet.
Do I have to keep my dog on a lead in the countryside?
On open access land in England and Wales, yes: a short lead (2 m maximum) from 1 March to 31 July, and at all times near livestock. The rest of the time it must stay under close control, and some nature reserves ban dogs or require a lead.
