The Perfect Recall: Steps to a dog that always comes back đŸđš
Updated 15 October 2026
In short: a good recall rests on three things: a dedicated word, always linked to something great; a progression from the living room to places full of distractions; and a long line clipped to the harness until the recall is reliable. Never call your dog to tell it off or to end every bit of fun, and don't chase it.
The golden rule: coming back must always pay
The most common mistake is calling your dog only for "boring" moments: going home, leaving the park, bath time. It soon learns that "Come!" means the party's over. Call it often for nothing: a treat, a stroke, and let it go again straight away.
Short and dedicated
"Here", "Come" or even a whistle: it doesn't matter, but always the same, used only for recall.
Always cheerful
An angry voice makes a dog want to run off, not come back.
The jackpot
High-value treats (chicken, cheese), favourite toy, a party: be more interesting than a squirrel.
A 4-level progression
No distractions. In the living room, say the word once, step back a few paces, reward as soon as it arrives. Several times a day, a few repetitions each.
A few more smells. Call it when it's busy, but not yet absorbed in something. Increase the distance.
Safety first. A 5â10 m long line, clipped to the harness (never the collar), somewhere quiet. If it doesn't come back, you help it gently without yanking.
Somewhere safe and permitted. Away from roads, once the recall works almost every time on the long line. Keep rewarding from time to time, for life.
Mind the calendar: in France, from 15 April to 30 June, dogs must be kept on a lead in forests away from forest tracks. Practise recall on a long line or in permitted areas.
Mistakes to avoid
If it doesn't come back, I run after it.
FALSETo your dog, that's a game of chase. Move away in the other direction or crouch down and encourage it instead.
I repeat the word until it obeys.
FALSEIt learns it can ignore the first calls. One call, then help it (step back, encourage it).
I tell it off when it finally comes back.
FALSEIt learns "coming back = punishment". Even after ten minutes, the return must be a celebration.

My recall is ready for off-lead if:
Clip the long line to a Confort Y harness: if it stops suddenly, the pressure goes on the chest, not the neck. For everyday walks, a 250 cm multi-position lead already gives some freedom.
Frequently asked questions
How do I teach my dog recall?
With a dedicated word that's always rewarded, starting at home and building up the difficulty, using a long line until it's reliable.
At what age should I start?
As soon as the puppy arrives, at home: it's the age when it follows you most readily.
My dog comes back at home but not outside, why?
Outside, the competition is fierce (smells, dogs, wildlife). Go back to the long line, shorten the distance, and raise the value of the rewards.
Long line on the collar or harness?
Always on the harness: a sudden stop at the end of a long line on a collar jerks hard on the neck.
