  • Top 10 Best Dog Leashes in 2026 (Comparison & Reviews)

    Jun 1, 2025

    Updated 15 October 2026

In short: for most dogs, a fixed lead of about 1.5 m or a multi-position lead is all you need day to day. Add a waterproof lead if your dog loves water and mud, and a 5–10 m long line for recall training in open spaces. Retractable leads are best avoided for training and in town. Choose based on your walks and your dog's behaviour, not fashion.

    Classic 150 cm lead

Simple and easy to handle in town. See our 150 cm leads

    Multi-position lead

Short (120 cm) in town, long (250 cm) in the countryside, across the body for hands-free walking. See multi-position leads

    Waterproof lead

It doesn't soak up water and wipes clean. See waterproof leads

Short fixed lead + anti-pull harness

While it still pulls, use a fixed lead of about 1.2–1.5 m (or a multi-position lead on its short setting) and a Confort Y harness. Then work on loose-lead walking.

    Lead types in detail

The basics. A fixed length, nothing to adjust: ideal in town and for training. Our 150 cm leads in printed polyester have a neoprene handle and a swivel clip, in 2 cm (small and medium dogs) or 2.5 cm (large dogs).

The all-rounder. Several rings to change the length and how you carry it. Our 250 cm multi-position leads offer 5 settings: long (250 cm), medium (150 cm), short (120 cm), across the body, and double for two dogs.

The all-terrain one. It doesn't get waterlogged or hold smells. Our waterproof multi-position leads are made of Hexa, a soft PVC lined with polyester. More: polyester or waterproof lead.

For recall. 5–10 m, clipped to the harness (never the collar), only in open spaces. See the perfect recall.

Use with care. The cord is always slightly tight, which teaches the dog to pull; a thin cord can burn or cut if it tangles, and control is limited if the dog suddenly bolts. Keep it for a dog that already walks well, in open spaces, never near a road.

Canicross, bikejoring. A lead with a shock absorber, linked to a waist belt and a suitable pulling harness. A specific use, to start gradually with a healthy adult dog.

    How to choose

    • Your walks: town, countryside, water, sport.
    • Behaviour: if it pulls, a short fixed lead and an anti-pull harness while it learns.
    • Length: 1.2–1.5 m in town, 2–2.5 m on walks, 5–10 m for recall. See the right length.
    • Width: narrow for a small dog, wider for a big one.
    • The clip: swivelling, metal, closing firmly.

    Frequently asked questions

    What's the best dog lead?

The one that suits your walks: a fixed lead of about 1.5 m or a multi-position lead for most dogs, a waterproof one for water and mud, a long line for recall.

    Are retractable leads dangerous?

They need care: limited control, a cord that can burn or cut, and they teach the dog to pull. Avoid them in town and during training.

    What is a multi-position lead?

A lead with several rings that lets you change the length, wear it across the body or walk two dogs.

Which lead for a dog that pulls?

A short fixed lead, combined with a Y harness with a chest ring, and loose-lead training.
