Can a dog sleep with a collar? Risks and best practices
Updated 15 October 2026
In short: in most cases it's better to take the collar off at night and when the dog is left alone: it can snag (crate, furniture, radiator), rub and make the tag jingle. Your dog stays identified through its microchip or tattoo, which are mandatory in France. If you'd rather leave it on, choose a flat, light, well-fitted collar with nothing dangling, or a breakaway collar that opens under strong pulling.
Sleeping in a collar: the risks
Snagging
A collar can catch on crate bars, a chair leg, a radiator grille or another dog's jaw during play. With no one there to help, things can quickly turn dangerous.
Rubbing
Worn day and night, a collar can break the coat, irritate the skin and trap moisture, especially in short-coated or sensitive-skinned dogs.
Less restful sleep
A stiff buckle or a tag that jingles with every move can make it harder for some dogs to settle.
Quiz: collar on or off at night?
Puppy, senior, dog left alone: special cases
Curious, it chews, squeezes into everything and grows fast. Take the collar off at night and whenever it's unsupervised. Check the fit every week. See also which harness for a puppy.
Thinner skin, arthritis, sometimes harder breathing: comfort comes first. A collar-free night is the best option.
Whether at night or during the day while you're out, a dog left alone shouldn't keep a collar on, especially if it shares the space with another dog: during play, a jaw can get caught in the collar.
If your dog sleeps outside, visible ID makes sense. Choose a breakaway collar or a well-fitted flat collar with nothing dangling.
Safer options
| Option | How | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Collar off at night | Take it off at bedtime, put it back on before going out. Keep it next to the lead. | Most dogs |
| Breakaway collar | A safety buckle opens under strong pulling. Not for use with a lead. | Dogs sleeping outside |
| Light flat collar | Smooth edges, two fingers of room, flat tag or engraving, nothing dangling. | Dogs sleeping near you |
| Harness only for walks | No collar at home, harness put on to go out. | Dogs that dislike the collar |
What about ID? In France, identification by microchip or tattoo is mandatory for dogs over 4 months. Make sure your details are up to date in the I-CAD register: that's what protects your dog when it isn't wearing a collar.

Frequently asked questions
Should I take my dog's collar off at night?
It's advisable in most cases, especially in a crate, for a puppy or a dog left alone: it prevents snagging and rests the skin.
Is my dog still identified without a collar?
Yes, thanks to its microchip or tattoo, mandatory in France for dogs over 4 months. Keep your details up to date in the national register.
Can a dog sleep in a harness?
Better not: a harness is made for walks, and it can rub and snag. Take it off when you get home.
What is a breakaway collar?
A collar whose buckle opens by itself under strong pulling, to free the dog if it gets caught. You don't clip a lead to it.
How many hours a day can a dog wear a collar?
There's no set limit, but a daily break (ideally at night) and regular skin checks are recommended.
