Dog Allergies and How to Manage Them
Updated 16 October 2026
In short: in dogs, allergies show up mainly on the skin: itching, paw licking, redness, recurring ear infections. The three main causes are fleas (the most common), the environment (pollen, dust mites: known as atopy) and food. Food allergy is diagnosed with a strict elimination diet of at least 8 weeks; blood or skin tests aren't reliable for it. A vet is essential to make the diagnosis and suggest treatment.
What types of allergy do dogs get?
Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) is the most common allergy. A single bite can trigger intense itching, especially on the lower back and at the base of the tail.
Solution: an effective parasite treatment for the dog and every pet in the household, without gaps. See preventing fleas and ticks.
A reaction to pollen, dust mites, moulds. Often seasonal at first, it can become year-round. It mainly affects the face, paws, armpits, belly and ears.
In dogs it mainly causes itching, far more rarely sneezing. It often starts in young adults, and some breeds are predisposed.
A reaction to a protein in the diet. Year-round itching, ear infections, sometimes digestive upsets.
According to a review of studies (Mueller et al., 2016), the sources most often involved in dogs are beef, dairy, chicken and wheat.
Rarer: a local reaction to a product (shampoo, detergent, certain materials). Redness is limited to contact areas, often thinly haired ones (belly, paws).
| Food allergen | Share of dogs reacting (out of 297) |
|---|---|
| Beef | 34% |
| Dairy | 17% |
| Chicken | 15% |
| Wheat | 13% |
| Soy | 6% |
How do you recognise an allergy in your dog?
My dog:
How does the vet diagnose it?
- Rule out parasitesFleas, mange, other parasites: strict parasite control is often the first step.
- Treat infectionsBacteria and yeasts (Malassezia) make itching worse and need treating.
- Elimination dietFor at least 8 weeks, a novel or hydrolysed protein diet with no other food or treats at all. Then the old food is reintroduced to confirm.
- AtopyDiagnosed once other causes are ruled out. Skin or blood tests then mainly help prepare desensitisation.
"Food allergy" blood tests aren't reliable for diagnosing food allergy in dogs. Only an elimination diet can do that.
How can you ease your dog's allergy day to day?
Continuous parasite control
Essential, especially with a flea allergy.
Wipe paws and belly
A damp cloth removes some of the pollen in season.
Wash bedding often
At 60 °C to limit dust mites, vacuum with a HEPA filter.
Prescribed treatment
Anti-itch medication, suitable shampoos, sometimes desensitisation: as your vet advises.
For gear, choose easy-wash accessories: a waterproof collar rinses clean and doesn't hold moisture against the skin.
Frequently asked questions
What's the most common allergy in dogs?
Flea bite allergy, followed by atopy (pollen, dust mites). Food allergy is less common.
How do I know if my dog is allergic to its food?
Only a strict elimination diet of at least 8 weeks, followed by reintroduction, can confirm it. Blood tests aren't reliable.
Can an allergy be cured?
Food allergy is controlled by avoiding the trigger. Atopy is managed long term: symptoms can be relieved, but it isn't always cured.
Do dogs sneeze when they have allergies?
Rarely. In dogs, allergies mainly show up as itchy skin and ear infections.
