Adopting a dog: How to know if it's a good shelter
Updated 17 October 2026
In short: a good shelter or rescue has a reputation you can check, shows how its dogs live, works with an identified vet (identification, vaccines, neutering), asks questions before placing a dog, socialises its animals and is transparent about its practices and funding. Visit before deciding, and be wary of an organisation that dodges your questions.

What are the signs of a good shelter?
The shelter I'm considering:
What should you check in practice?
Read reviews and comments on their social media, follow them for a few weeks, talk to adopters or former volunteers. First-hand feedback is often the most telling.
Kennel size, outdoor access, heating, cleanliness, food, walks and stimulation. An organisation that refuses any visit, or talks about euthanasia without looking for solutions, should raise a red flag.
Vaccines, microchipping, neutering, treatment of illness and injury, a clearly identified partner vet. No proof of care: red card.
Questionnaire, interview, sometimes a home visit: a good shelter checks your home is a good fit. See the steps of adoption.
Adoption fees, contract, return policy, sources of funding (donations, grants, fees) and activity reports: an ethical organisation explains all this openly.
Shelter or rescue? Shelters house dogs on their premises. Many rescues act in emergencies (rescues, pulling dogs from the pound) and rely on foster families, who do the dog's early socialisation. Both can be excellent.
Who do we work with?
Lou Chi & Co
Rescues dogs from breeding operations (unsold puppies, retired breeding dogs), treats them and places them through foster families. That's how Ulane, our little Staffie, came to us. Their page.
CPA (Loire)
Steps in directly in cruelty cases, often with the police. Arès, Youki, Benji, Liroy and Chouquette came from them. Their page.
Adopter un Golden Retriever
A group of enthusiasts rescuing Goldens and crosses. Very committed, but with no post-adoption follow-up. That's where we found Tosca. The group.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a shelter is reputable?
Check its reputation, visit it, ask for proof of vet care, and see whether it asks you questions before placing a dog.
Is it normal for a shelter to do a home visit?
Yes, it's actually a good sign: it's making sure the dog will be safe with you.
Are shelter dogs neutered?
Reputable organisations neuter their dogs unless there's a medical reason not to. Sometimes, in emergencies, it's done after adoption.
What's the difference between a shelter and a rescue?
A shelter houses dogs on site; many rescues work with foster families.
